Debt Settlement involves reducing your debt amount by negotiating with the credit card companies.  An aggressive approach to credit card debt relief, it offers the advantage of consumers being able to significantly lower the amount owed, by not taking as many years to pay the balance, and being debt free in 12 to 48 months.  Debt settlement clients will immediately notice a substantial reduction in their monthly payments compared to what their minimum monthly (usually interest only) payment was with the credit card companies. For consumers who are in serious credit card debt of $10K or more, and are unable or only able to make the minimum monthly payment and/or have already fallen behind, debt settlement is an excellent debt relief solution.

Credit Counseling involves working with credit card companies to lower the interest being charged and may result in consumers  becoming debt free in 4 to 5 years by saving money on their high interest credit cards. It is important to know that these companies are usually set up by the credit card companies in order to collect as much of the debt as possible.  These companies operate on a non-profit basis, but it must be remembered that all the profit they make beyond operating expenses goes back to the credit card company.  Any debt that they help you with will show as TPA (third party assistance) on your credit report, and in some instances, that can be just as bad for your credit score and rating as bankruptcy.

Debt Consolidation involves taking out one loan to pay off multiple debts and is often done to secure a lower interest rate.  It may also be used to  secure a fixed interest rate or facilitate making one payment instead of many, although usually for a much longer period of time. It is important to think carefully before utilizing consolidation because it can severely affect the ability of the debtor to discharge debts in bankruptcy.  Because debt consolidation offers consumers with high interest debt balances a distinct benefit, companies can take advantage of that benefit of refinancing to charge very high fees in the debt consolidation loan. In addition, some companies will knowingly wait until clients have backed themselves into a corner and must refinance in order to consolidate and pay off bills on which they are behind.

Chapter 7 Bankruptcy is considered a last resort by most and carries with it severe credit implications. However, this may seem like the only debt relief alternative for consumers who owe a lot of money on their credit cards and do not have adequate income to pay.  In a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, a debtor will generally be forced to liquidate all non-exempt assets of value and pay the creditor with the money from the sale. Most consumers who file Chapter 7 Bankruptcy believe that the long term damage isn’t worth it.

Doing nothing does not mean that a consumer’s creditors are doing the same. By attempting no solutions, a consumer will most likely be involved in lawsuits, repossession, and a lot of stress. Ignoring debts will never make them disappear; instead it will most certainly cause immense grief and stress over time.
